The Story Behind the Name

The Battle River, winding through Alberta’s diverse landscape, has long been a symbol of strength and resilience. Its name comes from a dramatic and tragic event in the winter of 1865—a confrontation between the Cree and Assiniboine warriors and the Blackfoot people near the riverbanks.

According to a historical account shared by Stan Cuthand, the Blackfoot were camped near the Battle River when a surprise nighttime attack occurred. The attackers stormed the camp, resulting in fierce fighting and the tragic loss of over a hundred Blackfoot lives, including women and children. Despite brave efforts by Chief Natosiy and others to defend their people, the Blackfoot suffered greatly.

A missionary named Father Lacombe, who had arrived with the Blackfoot just before the attack, tried to prevent the violence. He even walked into the battle waving a white flag and carrying a cross in an attempt to stop the bloodshed. Though he was wounded, his actions eventually helped bring the conflict to an end.

This event wasn’t isolated—it followed another raid earlier that year in which the Blackfoot had killed several Cree women. The back-and-forth nature of these tragic conflicts highlights the complexity of Indigenous relations during that time.

Today, the name “Battle River” calls to mind the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of the people who came before us. At Battle River Realty, we carry that same spirit into everything we do—walking alongside our clients through the ups and downs of buying or selling a home, always offering support, peace of mind, and trusted guidance. The river itself remains a beloved part of Alberta’s landscape, drawing people year-round—from ice fishing in the winter to paddling its gentle currents in the summer. There are so many reasons to love the Battle River, and we’re proud to share its name.

Buying or selling a home can feel like navigating a winding river—full of unexpected turns and challenges. At Coldwell Banker Battle River Realty, we are committed to guiding and empowering you through your real estate journey towards new and exciting beginnings.

A Legacy of Trust: The History of Battle River Realty

Our story began in 1968 when Norman and Eloise Umbach founded Battle River Realty Ltd. in downtown Camrose, Alberta. Their mission was simple: to provide exceptional real estate service while building lasting relationships within the community. At the time, the company also handled insurance and property management, offering clients a comprehensive experience.

Fast forward to 1988, we joined the Canada Trust Realty Network, operating as Canada Trust Battle River Realty. Then, five years later in 1993, we relocated to our current office—formerly the home of Al and Ann Schloss—transforming a historical, cozy residence into a welcoming space for our clients.

In 1996, Coldwell Banker Corporation acquired the real estate division of Canada Trust, leading to the next chapter of our journey. Since then, we have proudly operated as Coldwell Banker Battle River Realty, continuing to uphold the values that have defined us from the very beginning.

Through the years, ownership evolved—Dennis Johnson and Gerry Davis took the helm in 1984, followed by Alton & Jessica Puddicombe in 2018. Today, Alton serves as our Broker, while Dennis continues his career as Associate Broker, offering his wealth of experience to clients old and new.

The Coldwell Banker Way

Coldwell Banker has a rich history dating back to 1906 when Colbert Coldwell and Benjamin Arthur Banker founded the company in San Francisco. Their mission was to bring honesty and professionalism to real estate, a philosophy that continues to guide us today. As former Coldwell Banker CEO Chandler B. Barton once said:

“When you think about our business, our job, really, is to help people achieve security, comfort, and peace of mind. Outside of family and human life, a person’s home is the most treasured thing on earth.”

This perspective perfectly aligns with our approach at Battle River Realty. We don’t just sell homes—we help people find a sense of belonging, security, and the foundation for their future.
